Idealist is my first stop whenever I want to volunteer for a cause I care about; the listings are genuinely diverse and well organized. The paid jobs are solid too, though in my region there were fewer of them than I expected. Still a fantastic resource for anyone in the social sector.
Excellent volunteer listings, mission-aligned
Fewer paid roles in some regions
Idealist completely changed how I think about work. It connected me with a nonprofit in the environmental space, walked me through the org's mission, and the whole listing was transparent about pay and values. I got the job and could not be happier. For social-impact careers, nothing else compares.
Transparent, values-driven listings and real results
Idealist is unmatched if you want a job with social impact. I found a program coordinator role at a nonprofit I admired and it wasn't listed on any mainstream board. The volunteer and internship sections are great too. My only small gripe is the search filters could be more refined.
Unique social-impact and nonprofit roles
Search filters are a bit limited
After years in the corporate world I wanted purpose-driven work, and Idealist delivered. I found an advocacy organization hiring for exactly my skill set. The site is clearly built by people who care about the nonprofit space. I just wish the email alerts were a bit more frequent.
Purpose-driven listings you won't find elsewhere
Infrequent email alerts
I applied to several nonprofit roles through Idealist and got zero acknowledgement on any of them, then discovered my profile had logged me out and lost saved applications. I emailed support twice and never heard back. For a mission-driven platform the lack of any response left me completely stuck.
Lost applications and unresponsive support
