Spellbook is genuinely handy for standard NDAs and service agreements where its clause suggestions are spot on. On heavily negotiated, bespoke contracts though, the recommendations get generic and I end up ignoring half of them. It is a helpful assistant for routine work, less so for the tricky deals.

What makes Spellbook click for me is that it works directly in Microsoft Word, so there is no copy-pasting contracts into another tool. It suggests missing clauses, flags aggressive terms from the counterparty, and redlines in seconds. For a solo transactional practice it feels like having a junior associate reviewing every agreement.

I appreciate that Spellbook keeps me inside Word and the review pass it does is quick. But sometimes it flags issues that are not really issues and misses ones I would expect it to catch. I keep it on because the time savings on first reviews are real, just temper your expectations on accuracy.

I had high hopes but Spellbook's add-in caused Word to freeze and crash on my machine almost daily, twice losing unsaved redlines on a contract due that afternoon. Reinstalling and clearing the cache as support suggested did not resolve it. For a tool meant to save time, the instability cost me far more than it gave back.
