Calibre tamed a chaotic folder of thousands of e-books into a beautifully organised library with covers, tags, and metadata. Converting between EPUB and MOBI for my different readers is one click, and it always works. That this powerhouse is free and open source is remarkable.
Calibre does everything I could want for managing and converting e-books, and the metadata fetching saves me hours. It handles my entire collection without complaint. The only thing keeping it from a perfect score is the cluttered, slightly dated interface that takes some getting used to.
I've tried commercial e-book managers and none match Calibre's combination of library management, format conversion, and editing. It runs on my Windows and Linux machines identically and never costs a thing. The active community keeps improving it, which makes it a joy to recommend.

Once configured, Calibre flawlessly converts and organises my library and syncs books to my reader over USB and wirelessly. Getting the device profiles and conversion settings just right took a bit of trial and error. After that initial learning curve, it's been smooth sailing.
