Aave is genuinely impressive DeFi infrastructure and I appreciate the non-custodial control. But the learning curve around health factors, variable rates and liquidation thresholds is steep, and one wrong move can be costly. Torn — fantastic for those who understand the risks, intimidating for everyone else.

Steep learning curve
The Aave protocol itself works as advertised, but when I tried to lend a modest amount on Ethereum mainnet, the gas fees to deposit, approve and later withdraw ate up most of my yield. It only really makes sense with larger sums or on a cheaper network. Disappointing for a small retail user like me.
High gas fees crush small positions
Aave has been rock solid for earning yield on my stablecoins and borrowing against ETH when I don't want to sell. The protocol is transparent, the smart contracts are battle-tested, and the rates adjust sensibly with utilisation. As a non-custodial lending platform it does exactly what it promises without a middleman.

I supplied collateral and borrowed against it on Aave, but a sharp market dip triggered a liquidation before I could top up, and the penalty took a real bite. I understand DeFi carries this risk, but the health-factor warnings didn't give me enough runway to react. Disappointed with how quickly it cascaded.

I've been supplying USDC to Aave for over a year and the yield has consistently beaten anything a centralised platform offered, with full control of my keys. Borrowing for a short-term need was instant and required no paperwork or credit check. The interface makes a complex DeFi protocol feel approachable.
